The First World War was largely set in motion by the war planners. The Germans had worked on the Von Schlieffen Plan for decades. The French had worked on their own, opposing Plan XVII. Once the armies were mobilized, the momentum toward war was unstoppable and millions of men left their homes and farms and headed to their battle stations along the frontiers.
